The teacher's guide to relaxation: Tips for a fun, enjoyable and stress-free break

That's a wrap! With Term 1 all wound up, it's time for us, as teachers, to take a well deserved break and reset for Term 2. The dreaded cold and flu season is just around the corner, and we need to use this period to recharge our minds and bodies to avoid burning out.

Reconnect

With the increasingly hectic workload we have as teachers, it is hard to maintain old friendships, let alone new ones. Take this time as an opportunity to reconnect and show loved ones how much their friendship means to you. Just taking time out for a coffee and a catch-up will do wonders for your mental health, as well as reinforce and strengthen bonds. Why not plan a lunchtime catch-up with your 9–5 friends?

Make time for you

It is so important to take time out for you. Draw a bath, cuddle up with a book, chill out and watch a movie—it doesn't matter what it is, just make sure you can relax!

Explore

Get involved in your local community! Take a wander through your local area, or visit the local high street or market garden—you will be surprised at what you might see and learn.

Listen

The power of music has long been described as soothing, with an unique link to our emotions, and as such it can be an extremely effective stress management tool. So put on your favourite music, update your music library, take a singing class or go to gigs and watch live music—see where the power of music takes you!

Intrapersonal intelligence

Set short-term and long-term goals for the year ahead. What have you done this year that you would change for next year? How can you make more time for you during Semester 2? Take this time to reflect.

Get back into that exercise routine

With the long winter nights closing in, it is easy to fall into the routine of 'I'll do it tomorrow'. Use this time to set goals and stick to them. A healthy exercise routine will do wonders for your mental and physical health once Term 2 begins.

Set a work-life balance for the rest of the year

To-do lists! Prioritise what needs to be done straightaway—the rest can wait.
