The benefits of using posters at school

If you teach young children, you know how important it is to keep them focused and engaged throughout the day. One of the things that keeps kids interested is also one of the easiest things you can do for them: putting up signs and posters on the walls of your classroom. Educational posters made for children are colourful and include information that can be easily digested in a visual manner.

Keeping kids in love with learning

There is a lot to learn throughout primary school, after all, these are the foundation years. However, this can be hindered at times when children are restless and too energetic to concentrate properly. Teachers have a lot of tricks up their sleeves, but one of the best methods is providing more stimulating ways to teach the content—which can be done by keeping the environment as interesting as possible for them. Well-lit classrooms with lots of visual stimulation help students stay a more alert and interested in what they’re learning, and colourful posters are ideal to use for this.

R.I.C. Publications has a range of educational school posters for ages 3–12, allowing students to learn the content in a way their brain will retain. We use colours such as red, blue, green and yellow, which attract kids’ attention as soon as they enter the classroom.

Types of posters available

When it comes to posters for the classroom, the only limit is your imagination. A handful of the school posters now available include:

  • anti-bullying
  • general educational information
  • animals, people, fantasy, and fairytales
  • behaviour management
  • Maths and other games
  • various skills, including problem-solving, telling time, fractions, multiplication, division and more

On R.I.C.’s website, posters and other teaching materials are broken down into categories, including Foundation, primary education (Years 1–6) and secondary education. They are then further broken into a variety of subjects, such as:

  • The Arts
  • English
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Languages
  • Mathematics
  • Science

Why posters work

Today’s classroom posters are unlike those of the past. They are now bright, colourful and full of high-tech graphics. They are designed to instantly get children’s attention and keep them interested in the task at hand.

Not only do they help students remember when it comes to certain subjects, but the mere look of the posters makes the kids want to look at the posters even more frequently. When they do this, they learn a little more about that particular skill or subject area without even realising that’s what they’re doing.  When it comes to learning, teachers have to be creative or the kids will lose interest quickly. Another great thing about posters is that if a student is losing focus on the current task, they will look around the room to find something of interest. Even though being distracted isn’t ideal, they will be honing their skills in other areas inadvertently by reading the posters around the classroom.

Piquing students’ interest is a must, and if teachers place posters on the walls around the classroom, kids will never run out of things to look at and learn from. Since the posters are made to highlight any subject area or skill, you are always guaranteed to find just what you need to stimulate your students in the classroom.

Teachers are not the only ones who appreciate and benefit from educational posters—they are great for parents too. This is especially true with the increase in homeschooling, and these educational resources can help parents with their children’s retention and homework.

Of course, one of the main reasons why posters and signs are such a good idea is because they simply make time in the classroom a lot more fun. If children can associate learning with fun, their time in the classroom will be a lot more productive. Subjects and skills that students think are boring or challenging will be more difficult for them to remember, so posters go a long way in helping kids learn in a more fun and interesting way.
