Developing mindfulness - Introduction

Recently, there has been a big push in schools to develop students' mindfulness. This is the result of data trends showing the increasing frequency of students with:

  • mental health issues including anxiety and depression
  • behaviour issues resulting from hyperactivity, aggression or disengagement
  • poor decision-making skills in relation to their thoughts, feelings and actions.

So what is mindfulness and why is it important?

Mindfulness is the art of paying attention to the present moment, without judgement, so you can think clearly and make informed decisions about your personal life, your relationships and your connections with the world around you. It helps you to:

  • concentrate, relax and be more productive
  • manage and cope with stressful situations
  • build relationships with others
  • reflect on and improve actions and reactions to different situations.

To teach mindfulness effectively, you must believe in it and have confidence in how to teach it. Over the next 5 weeks, we will be giving you tips for how to develop mindfulness in your own lives and those of your students through a simple process that can be used with any age group!

This week, take time to reflect on how ‘mindful’ you think you are; and how confident you are in developing mindfulness in your students.
