How to incorporate Easter into your classroom this year

With Easter just around the corner, you might be wondering how to incorporate Easter learning into your classroom.

There are two simple ways to approach this — thematic teaching and individual activities. In today’s article, we’re sharing how you can teach using both approaches.

Thematic teaching

Like many seasonal holidays and global topics of interest, Easter is a fantastic opportunity to incorporate thematic teaching into the classroom.

Thematic teaching involves using one theme across cross-curricular activities for a duration of time. For example, you might implement a ‘travel’ theme for four weeks, and incorporate activities that focus on travel for each subject area.

Themes are beneficial for many reasons:

  • Relevance and engagement – by choosing topics that are relevant and interesting to students, you increase student engagement, motivation, and connection to the material.
  • Cross-curricular learning – themes allow students to explore topics from multiple perspectives, encouraging a more comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to learning and exposing them to broader context.
  • Increased learning retention – learning within a thematic framework helps students anchor more information into their memory, since it’s all connected to a central theme.
  • Simpler lesson planning – by connecting every subject to one theme, it makes it easier to decide what you’re going to be focusing on for the next duration of time and align activities accordingly.

Individual worksheets

If you’d rather focus on individualised learning experience to bring the magic of Easter into your classroom, you can still incorporate the topic using individual activities.

There’s lots of creative ways to use individual activities to teach a subject area:

  • Personalised learning – individual activities allow students to progress at their own pace and caters to diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • Increased engagement – lots of individual activities can include hands-on tasks, projects, research and crafts, and therefore encourage active participation in learning.
  • Differentiation – teachers can easily differentiate instruction to meet the varied needs of students by tailoring tasks and materials based on students’ readiness levels and learning profiles.
